Captain Trotter is the tritagonist-turned-antagonist of Chapter 4 and the final boss of the Temple of the Red Sun. A yellow-skinned pirate captain leading the Pirate Crew, he initially makes a deal with the player to let them collect the Firebrand sword โ€” then turns on you. Armed with coin-flip attacks, barrel throws, and the undodgeable Inferno, Trotter switches between Ranged and Melee stances while taking Double Turns. He also appears in The Pit at Floor 49. Defeating him rewards the Firebrand, one of the legendary SFOTH swords.

Weaknesses

  • โˆ’ Ice attacks (Captain Trotter is fire-themed, Ice Dagger and Blizzard deal bonus damage)
  • โˆ’ Multi-hit combos (break through his Double Turns rhythm)
  • โˆ’ Shield / Barrier (negates undodgeable Inferno entirely)
  • โˆ’ Healing over time (Double Turns pressure requires sustain)

Resistances

  • โœ• Fire attacks (fully resisted โ€” pirate captain is fire-imbued)
  • โœ• Single heavy hits (Double Turns makes him recover faster between turns)
  • โœ• Slow effects (Ranged Stance allows him to attack from distance regardless)

Solo Strategy

Captain Trotter has one phase with Double Turns โ€” he acts twice per round. His key mechanic is Stance Switching: in Melee Stance he uses Coin Flip (single or triple-shot) and Barrel Toss; in Ranged Stance he uses Coin Flip variants at range and Inferno. Inferno is undodgeable โ€” always keep Shield ready for this attack. When he uses Drink (self-heal), punish him during the recovery window with your strongest combos. His Call For Help summons Pirate Crew minions โ€” eliminate these quickly with AoE (Blizzard) to prevent being overwhelmed. Recommended BP 25+. Ice cards are your best friend throughout this fight. The battle rewards the Firebrand sword, making it one of the most important boss fights in the Chapter 4 progression.
